Self-Love is Liberation
Welcome to my telehealth practice! I'm Hunter Montoya. I’m a licensed psychologist, and I'm committed to the creation of a strong and authentic therapeutic relationship through which you can experience the trust and support necessary to access your strengths and cultivate self-compassion. I'm trained in several evidence-based approaches to therapy (e.g., ACT, DBT, SFBT) and I enjoy treating a very wide range of concerns, from the stress of life transitions to the many forms of anxiety and depression to chronic thoughts of suicide. I use a flexible approach to therapy in order to align with your individual needs, and I apply a strengths-based, multicultural lens to ensure that you’re understood in the context of the life you’ve lived. I strive to treat you with warmth, dignity, and respect.
I’m passionate about using therapy as a tool of liberation, as our mental health is deeply related to both the quality of our relationships and the challenging circumstances of our daily lives. My hope is that our time together can empower you to meet your personal goals and to navigate life’s adversities with meaning and satisfaction. By working together to foster self-trust, agency, and empowerment in the face of adversity and complex societal systems, I believe our work together can be an important step towards dismantling widespread systems of oppression.
I was raised in San Diego, California, and I received my PhD in Counseling Psychology from the University of Northern Colorado. I completed both my doctoral internship and postdoctoral fellowship at CU Boulder's Counseling and Psychiatric Services (CAPS), where I also specialized in providing compassionate crisis services as well as behavioral health support in their university medical clinic. I have further experience working in the university counseling centers of UNC and CSU Fort Collins.
I am also engaged in local activist spaces. I currently work with Doctors Against Genocide to address global health inequities and foster prevention efforts by raising awareness about the healthcare impacts of genocide. Please feel free to contact me if you have professional inquiries, interest in collaboration, or have interest in getting involved.
